This year marks a major milestone in the history of beer: Twenty years ago, our first Pentair Beer Membrane Filtration (BMF) System was sold.
This technology has come a long way.
It all started with the German inventor known as the “Einstein of beer”, Lorenz Adalbert Enzinger, who presented the first beer filter at a brewing exhibition in Munich in 1880.
The next generation of beer filters were developed early in the 1900s, again by Enzinger.
In 1930, the first Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filter was proven in the US, and shortly after WWII, US, English and Japanese breweries adopted the process and made DE filtration industry standard for primary beer clarification.
Fast-forward to the 2000s, an alternative for DE filtration was developed and introduced: hollow fiber membrane filtration. This new filtration process was adopted by many breweries, making beer filtration more efficient and faster than ever before.
Since 2003 Pentair has sold over 180 beer membrane filter lines across the globe, enabling them to filter more than 200 million hectoliters of beer. This impressive feat shows that beer filtration technology is constantly evolving and will continue to do so in the future.
