Pentair has installed and commissioned a new CO2 recovery site located in Scotland, the United Kingdom, on behalf of Dry Ice Scotland. The initiative will see the production of dry ice, which will help to decarbonize the dry ice industry, in addition, to help reduce the reliance on CO2 production from fossil fuels.
Haffmans B.V., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pentair Water Process Technology B.V., (“Pentair”), and a leading global provider of sustainable solutions, including biogas upgrading technologies and carbon capture technologies, and Dry Ice Scotland Ltd, the UK's largest independent dry ice manufacturer and distributor, are launching a new production site that will allow Dry Ice Scotland to produce dry ice from renewable, bio-CO2.
Established in 2012, the Crocketford based dry ice production firm, run by brothers Richard and Ed Nimmons, serves the logistics, food delivery, aerospace, and pharmaceutical sectors.
The new production site will capture, purify and liquefy carbon dioxide (CO2) which is generated as a waste by-product from biogas. This biogas is produced at a nearby anaerobic digestor plant, where the CO2 is captured rather than emitted into the atmosphere.
Pentair technology recovers the captured CO2, purifies, and liquefies it into bio-CO2, creating a by-product with versatile applications. In this case, the bio-CO2 is compressed into dry ice pellets and slices.
The CO2 used in the production of dry ice comes from a renewable source: upgraded biogas, as opposed to fossil fuels.
Dry ice also has a wide variety of applications, such as a vaccine or biological sample transportation, cold-chain logistics, and transporting perishables for both domestic and long-distance deliveries.
